On Uttering the Sacred Name of G-d

As Jewish Meshiykhiyyim (i.e. authentic, monotheistic Messianic Jews) we stress the importance of intention in all matters. If ones intention is righteous that covers a multitude of possible mistakes. Fortunately for us all HaShem considers our hearts, our intentions.

What is permitted or rejected somewhat varies according times and circumstances. For instance, in a time when male and female Pagan temple prostitutes donned certain hair styles to identify themselves Rav Paul states that these styles should be rejected (I Corinthians 11:14,15) lest there be confusion. Today hairstyles do not imply an affinity with Pagan deities and many godly people keep their hair short or long depending on personal preference. This is just an example. We want to avoid legalism and seek to understand the intentions of the various commands. In the case of uttering the Sacred Name similar considerations should be pondered.

Today the so-called "Holy Names Movement" and others are, in my opinion, cheapening the Sacred Name by overuse and indiscriminate use. For this reason (among others) we at Temple and Yeshiva Beth HaShem believe that the ancient Jewish tradition of never uttering the Sacred Name needs to be reinforced and carefully observed lest we inadvertently offend the Sacred Name: The Name should not be uttered.

We have a strict rule in our e-groups, blogs etc. against writing the Sacred Name (in any form). In the following piece I am making an exception to this rule because it is important that everyone understands this material and the following excellent educational article is from a highly respected Jewish source, Rabbi Louis Jacobs of My Jewish Learning -- All emphasis mine:

The Tetragrammaton is the four-letter name of God formed from the letters yod, hey, vav, and hey, hence YHVH in the usual English rendering. The older form JHVH is based on the rendering of yod as jod [Note: there is no jod in Hebrew, this was an English substitution made during the 1600's CE].

This name is usually translated in English as "the Lord," following the Greek translation as kyrios. All this goes back to the Jewish practice of never pronouncing the name as it is written but as Adonai, "the Lord." In printed texts the vowels of this word are placed under the letters of the Tetragrammaton. (Hence the name was read erroneously by Christians as "Jehova," a name completely unknown in the Jewish tradition.) The original pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton has been lost, owing to the strong Jewish disapproval of pronouncing the name. The pronunciation Yahveh or Yahweh is based on that used by some of the Church Fathers but there is no certainty at all in this matter. Most biblical scholars, nowadays, prefer to render it simply as YHWH or JHVH without the vowels. This name occurs 6,823 times in the present text of the Hebrew Bible.

What does the name mean? In Exodus 3:14-15 the name is associated with the idea of "being," and hence some have understood the original meaning to be "He-Who-Is," or "He who brings being into being."

Generally, as [scholar Umberto] Cassuto and others have noted, the name Elohim ("God") is used in the Bible of God in His universalistic aspect, the God of the whole universe, while the Tetragrammaton is used of God in His special relationship with the people of Israel.

The Tetragrammaton in Post-Bibical Literature

The Tetragrammaton is known in the rabbinic literature as Ha-Shem ("the Name") or Shem Ha-Meforash, meaning either the "special" name or the name uttered explicitly, that is, by the High Priest in the Temple. The Rabbis also refer to it as Shem Ha-Meyuhad ("the Unique Name") or as "the Four Letter Name." There is evidence that even after the change-over (between the fourth and second centuries BCE) from the old Hebrew writing to the so-called "square" script now used, the Tetragrammaton was sometimes written in the Scrolls in the old script. Although the Rabbis rejected this procedure, it is attested to as late as the fifth century CE in a fragment of Aquila's Greek translation and is mentioned by Origen as well as being found in some of the Qumran texts.

The data regarding the prohibition of pronouncing the Tetragrammaton as it is written are complicated but the following are the main details. Philo (Life of Moses, ii. II) observes that on the front of the High Priest's miter were incised the four letters of the divine name which it is lawful only for the priests to utter in the Temple (in the priestly blessing) and for no one else, to utter anywhere.

The [midrash] Sifre (Numbers 43) similarly states that in the Temple the priestly blessing was given with the pronunciation of the special name (Shem Ha- Meforash) but outside the Temple with the substitute name (Adonai). The Mishnah (Sotah 7: 6; Tamid 7:2) also states that that in the Temple the name was uttered as written but outside the Temple by its substitute. In another Mishnah (Yoma 6: 2) it is stated that on Yom Kippur when the High Priest uttered the Shem Ha-Meforash the people fell on their faces and proclaimed: "Blessed be the name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever."

The most relevant text for the prohibition against uttering the Tetragrammaton as it is written is the Mishnah (Sanhedrin 10:1) in which Abba Saul declares that one who pronounces the divine name with its letters (i.e. as it is spelled) has no share in the World to Come....

The reason why Jews were reluctant to utter the Tetragrammaton is not too clear, but appears to based on the idea that this name is so descriptive of God that it was considered to be gross irreverence to use it. It is also possible that the use of this name in some circles for magical purposes was a further reason why its pronunciation was forbidden. In the Babylonian Talmud (Pesahim 50a) there is a homily on the verse: "In that day shall the Lord be One, and His name One" (Zechariah 14:9). This is understood to mean that in this world the Tetragrammaton is read as Adonai but in the Messianic age the name will once again be pronounced as it is written.

Generally in the rabbinic literature, the Tetragrammaton is interpreted as referring to God in His attribute of mercy and Elohim to God in His attribute of judgment. Thus a Midrah explains why the Tetragrammaton is used together with Elohim in the second chapter of Genesis while Elohim on its own is used in the first chapter, on the grounds that God created the world with His attribute of strict justice but added the attribute of mercy so that the world could endure.

The Tetragrammaton in Medieval Philosophy

Judah Halevi in his Kuzari (iv. 1-17) has Elohim represents divinity but does not necessarily refer to God. Sometimes in Scripture this name refers to the gods of polytheistic religion. The Tetragrammaton, on the other hand, is God's personal name...

For Maimonides (Guide of the Perplexed, 1.61) all the divine names are simply descriptions of God's actions. This includes the name Adonai, which simply expressed the lordship of God and lordship is applicable, too, to human beings. The sole exception is the Tetragrammaton, which, unlike other names, gives a clear, unequivocal indication of God's essence. This name has no derivation. The prohibition against pronouncing the Tetragrammaton exists because this name is indicative of the divine essence in a way that no created thing is associated with Him.

When the Rabbis say that before the world was created there was only God and His name they call attention to the special nature of this name and how it differs from all the other names for God. The other names are derived from God's acts in the world and therefore could only have come into being after the world had been created. But the Tetragrammaton indicates God's essence and was therefore in being before the world was created.

Maimonides takes strong issue with the doctrine, popular in his day, that the Tetragrammaton has magical power or that there are a number of divine names by which magical influences can be brought to bear on the world. The Tetragrammaton is nothing else than the four-letter name, distinguished from all others solely because it is indicative of God's essence....

For Sale or Trade: Manure Spreader

YOU'RE PROBABLY NOT INTERESTED IN USED FARM EQUIPMENT,

BUT YOU MIGHT ENJOY THIS AD TAKEN FROM CRAIG'S LIST.

Fifty-year old manure spreader. Not sure of brand. Said to have been produced in Kenya. Used for a few years in Indonesia before being smuggled into the US via Hawaii. Of questionable pedigree. Does not appear to have ever been worked hard. Apparently, it was pampered by various owners over the years. It doesn't work very often, but when it does it can sling crap for amazing distances. I am hoping to retire the manure spreader this November. I really don't want it hanging around getting in the way. I would prefer a foreign buyer to relocate the manure spreader out of the country. I would be willing to trade it for a nicely framed copy of the United States Constitution.

Location: Currently being stored in a big white warehouse in Washington, D.C.

Romney Confirms the Re-election of Obama

Well.... at least he didn't pick Condi Rice or Ron Paul! That's something I guess...

With the choice of Paul Ryan for his VP Corporatist Mit Romney confirms that his administration, if elected, will be applying draconian budget cutting measures, further crippling those who can least afford the hit. All those who rely on Social Security (now or in the future), Medicare (now or in the future), WICK, Food Stamps, unemployment insurance, AFDC etc. need to think very carefully before voting this November.

Probably (not certainly because Romney is still mainly mute on the subject) Romney would be better than Obama when it comes to Israel. However that's not the only critical issue. This unwise VP selection will doubtless add more Independents to the Democrat/al Ikhwan party voting block and leave innumerable "lower class," underemployed, unemployed, elderly and disabled voters feeling politically and economically dis-empowered. This will inevitably means that more people will vote for Obama (whose Islamo-Marxist agenda will not as directly assault ones survival in the short term) or it will mean staying away from the polling places all together.

Californian and other Republicans had no vote in selecting Romney as the Republican nominee. Those who got no vote in the matter and those who voted for someone other than Romney because they wanted a Conservative nominee to represent them, have no reason to vote Romney now, especially those of us the Republican hierarchy did not allow to vote on the nominee. Like W. Bush, Mit Romney does not share the views of the majority of Republicans so why vote for him?

Fact: Opposing the Obama agenda (which most Americans still do not understand) by committing personal and national economic suicide will not sit well with many voters, including Republicans.

This latest out of touch misstep could well cinch the election for Obama and I suspect it has.

At this point I plan to sit the election out. I don't see how I can vote for either of these globalists as a compassionate nationalist American.

When the only options are Globalist-Fascism (Romney) and Marxism mixed with Islamic-fascism (Obama) how does a freedom-minded person choose? Please share your thoughts in the comments section.

Disregard my previous post about the new blog and group site.

Please disregard my previous post about the new blog and group site.

Tribe.net looked perfect until I began looking at their other site members. A very large percentage of the site is porn. Because of the way the tribes concept works porn is unavoidable and would filter into our sites. A Jewish group there had this very problem and I read their post.
I'm figuring out how to delete the account now.

Those of you who have already joined, thank you. You wont need to do anything because I have not approved anyone yet (other than Ahuva). You MAY want to delete your tribes account however.

I sincerely apologize for this. What they do there violates their own TOS.

I'm still looking for a new blog site. Next time I'll wait until I've checked it out more fully before sending out invitations.

My New Blog Home -- Plus My New Messianic Group

Hi friends,
Barring the unexpected, I think I've found my new blog home:
http://people.tribe.net/johnofallfaith

I will probably use a single blog there rather than two, using my oldest and best known screen name, John of AllFaith.
This site offers all the basic features of Multiply plus few more. It seems more open to free speech and content than most of the other blog sites I've checked out lately. And its free (and they say they plan to remain that way). Several of the other sites are giving free limited space with bandwidth restrictions etc. that can fast become a pain and lead to lost material.

Those who are looking for a new home may want to check this one out. If you like what you find, let's connect there!

The End of Multiply. Where will you go now?

The new Multiply owners, who just happen to be citizens of Obama's legal country (the predominately Muslim country of Indonesia) have announced the death of Multiply. Here's the announcement:

Hello. Stefan here, writing you from Multiply HQ in Jakarta, Indonesia.

As most of you are probably aware, Multiply's mission has evolved over the past year and a half to become the biggest and most beloved ecommerce marketplace in two very exciting markets, Indonesia and the Philippines. As our focus has shifted, we have reviewed all of our operations, and made some decisions that will affect everyone here.

From December 1st, we will unfortunately no longer be able to support Multiply in its current form - notably we will be removing the social networking and content sharing part of Multiply (photos, videos, blogs, social messaging, etc.). We have decided to discontinue providing and hosting these services, as we have concluded that other Internet sites who are committed to social networking services will do a better job serving you than we can.
For our existing users of social networking features, we will be providing easy ways for you to either download your stuff (photos, blogs, content, etc), or migrate it to other online services. We'll announce the precise details shortly. It will be your choice whether to download, migrate or just let your content lapse (and get deleted).
For our existing ecommerce users (both buyers and sellers) in Indonesia and the Philippines, there will be no action required.
Regarding any existing Multiply Premium subscriptions we will refund any unused balance, and apologize for any inconvenience this will cause. Please contact customer service to request a refund. Note that this is for Multiply Premium, not the ecommerce related Multiply Trust product.

I am aware of how disruptive this news may be, and understand the disappointment that it may cause. Ultimately this was a business decision, critical to our to success moving forward. Instead, we are excited to pursue our own mission to give the 350 million consumers in Indonesia and the Philippines a great way to buy and sell items online. Our singular focus now is for Multiply to retain its status as a vibrant e-commerce destination in Southeast Asia in the years ahead.

I suspect that many of you will not like this news, and am sorry to have to deliver it now. I hope that you will be able to understand the reasons for our decision and thank you for being a part of the Multiply community over the past eight years.

Fiddler on the roof - Anatevka (with subtitles)

Does This Mean Romney is Now Pro-Israel? Nope

Yesterday the Unity Coalition for Israel released a bit of propaganda aimed at suggesting that Jews should support Romney. The facts do no such thing. IF Romney makes the pledge the piece suggests it will be a good sign of his support for Israel. Thus far however, including in the weak speech this piece alludes to, Romney's Israel policies and views remain unknown. Don't drink the Kool-aid. If Romney wants the votes of pro-Israel Jews and Christians he needs to earn our trust. Thus far he hasn't.

IF
Romney acts on this pledge (which is not his) and promises to sign the bill (which he had nothing to with crafting) it will go a long way to his getting my support. I heard the speech. It was weak at best as I commented on in my previous blogs. When Gingrich brought up acknowledging Jerusalem as our legally recognized capital during a debate Romney made a "can you believe this guy" smirk that revealed volumes. I see no evidence that Romney is a friend of Israel or non-billionaire Americans.

The UCI (
) is Christian organization with some Jewish involvement. Of itself this is not a bad thing of course, Christians should support Israel, but most of the UCI Christians are Right Wing Republicans who want to see Romney elected whatever his position on Israel really is. The known facts about Romney do not support their political rhetoric.

Time will tell.

Romney needs to speak up and act
. If he wants to be ruler he needs to show some courage and tell the world what he thinks about Israel. The endorsement of the UCI means little until he does. It is a dangerous thing for anyone or any group to assume they know the mind of a politician, especially one as slippery and non-committal as Romney.

My advice remains not to commit to either candidate until Romney himself comes out of the closet about Israel and his views. Assuming he is with us is both unfounded and dangerous.

Dear Governor Mitt Romney,

Thank you for your clear declaration of solidarity with Israel during your interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN when you were recently in Jerusalem.

With many other Americans who admire Israel, I applaud your firm stand to fulfill the Jerusalem Embassy Act, voted overwhelmingly into Public Law in 1995 (#104-45 passed by both Democrats and Republicans). Moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Israel`s capital, is a long overdue Congressional commitment.

The Jerusalem Embassy Act 1995 is American law! It is only the continuous waivers that have prevented the movement of the Embassy. The current bills in Congress would remove this waiver and your voiced support for the Embassy move will certainly facilitate passage of this bill.

I agree with your statement: "A nation has the capacity to choose its own capital city, and Jerusalem is Israel`s capital. I think it`s long been the policy to ultimately have our Embassy in the nation`s capital of Jerusalem ... I would follow the same policy we have had in the past; our Embassy would be in the capital, and the timing of that is something I would want to work out in accordance with the government of Israel."

As you know, your support in moving the Embassy is extremely important because it will symbolically demonstrate to the world the strong bond between Israel and the United States. All major institutions of Israel`s government are located in Jerusalem - not in Tel Aviv, e.g. the Supreme Court, the Knesset (Parliament), the Office of the Prime Minister, and the residences and offices of most government leaders. Once the Embassy is moved, other nations will be encouraged to follow the leadership of the U.S., thereby demonstrating greater world-wide support for Israel. The US has its Embassy in the capitol city of every country in the world. Israel is the only exception.

The Unity Coalition for Israel speaks for millions of Americans who support Israel as our strongest ally in the Middle East. Your willingness to speak out on this vital issue is greatly appreciated. You have highlighted the injustice of not having our Embassy in the Capital city of Jerusalem and demonstrated to your supporters and to non-supporters alike that you are determined to correct a wrong because it is the right thing to do.

With great appreciation for your leadership,

Fire here (Again)

Please be in prayer for Ahuva and I and the others of this area as two wild fires are currently burning out control. Containment is not expected until August 10 or later. The closest is about 20 miles away (at Beldon Town, Ca.) and is not directly threatening us, however the air is becoming very thick with smoke here so we will probably have to evacuate before this "human-caused" blaze is contained.

Obama Supportin Al Ikhwan Takeover of Syria... Surprized?

Al Ikhwan ("Muslim brotherhood") covert operative and US junta leader Husein Obama is openly supporting the Al Ikhwan backed "Muslim (Arab) Spring" in their bid to take over Syria. No surprise, but here's a news story about the ongoing al Ikhwan/US assault on the government of Syria.

Source
Emphasis mine

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for rebels seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government, sources familiar with the matter said.

Obama's order, approved earlier this year and known as an intelligence "finding," broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the rebels oust Assad.

This and other developments signal a shift toward growing, albeit still circumscribed, support for Assad's armed opponents - a shift that intensified following last month's failure of the U.N. Security Council to agree on tougher sanctions against the Damascus government.

The White House is for now apparently stopping short of giving the rebels lethal weapons, even as some U.S. allies do just that.

But U.S. and European officials have said that there have been noticeable improvements in the coherence and effectiveness of Syrian rebel groups in the past few weeks. That represents a significant change in assessments of the rebels by Western officials, who previously characterized Assad's opponents as a disorganized, almost chaotic, rabble.

Precisely when Obama signed the secret intelligence authorization, an action not previously reported, could not be determined. [Remember his campaign promises about an open government?]

The full extent of clandestine support that agencies like the CIA might be providing also is unclear.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor declined comment.

'NERVE CENTER'

A U.S. government source acknowledged that under provisions of the presidential finding, the United States was collaborating with a secret command center operated by Turkey and its allies.

[Remember that the largely (Sufi) Muslim country of Turkey is currently strengthening its ties with Al Ikhwan Egypt, adopting a more radicalized form of Islam, and has recently closed its borders with Greece and other Western countries]

Last week, Reuters reported that, along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Turkey had established a secret base near the Syrian border to help direct vital military and communications support to Assad's opponents.

[Can someone say Allahu Akbar?]

This "nerve center" is in Adana, a city in southern Turkey about 60 miles from the Syrian border, which is also home to Incirlik, a U.S. air base where U.S. military and intelligence agencies maintain a substantial presence.

Turkey's [formerly] moderate Islamist government has been demanding Assad's departure with growing vehemence. Turkish authorities are said by current and former U.S. government officials to be increasingly involved in providing Syrian rebels with training and possibly equipment.

European government sources said wealthy families in Saudi Arabia and Qatar were providing significant financing to the rebels. Senior officials of the Saudi and Qatari governments have publicly called for Assad's departure.

[These would be the same wealthy Saudi's who financed Obama's election as I discussed at length during his successful takeover of the US government:

]

Gaddafi assassinated after exposing Obama as a Kenyan born Muslim

On Tuesday, NBC News reported that the Free Syrian Army had obtained nearly two dozen surface-to-air missiles, weapons that could be used against Assad's helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Syrian government armed forces have employed such air power more extensively in recent days.

NBC said the shoulder-fired missiles, also known as MANPADs, had been delivered to the rebels via Turkey.

On Wednesday, however, Bassam al-Dada, a political adviser to the Free Syrian Army, denied the NBC report, telling the Arabic-language TV network Al-Arabiya that the group had "not obtained any such weapons at all." U.S. government sources said they could not confirm the MANPADs deliveries, but could not rule them out either.

Current and former U.S. and European officials previously said that weapons supplies, which were being organized and financed by Qatar and Saudi Arabia, were largely limited to guns and a limited number of anti-tank weapons, such as bazookas.

Indications are that U.S. agencies have not been involved in providing weapons to Assad's opponents. In order to do so, Obama would have to approve a supplement, known as a "memorandum of notification, to his initial broad intelligence finding.

Further such memoranda would have to be signed by Obama to authorize other specific clandestine operations to support Syrian rebels.

Reuters first reported last week that the White House had crafted a directive authorizing greater U.S. covert assistance to Syrian rebels. It was unclear at that time whether Obama had signed it.

OVERT SUPPORT

Separately from the president's secret order, the Obama administration has stated publicly that it is providing some backing for Assad's opponents.

The State Department said on Wednesday the U.S. government had set aside a total of $25 million for "non-lethal" assistance to the Syrian opposition. A U.S. official said that was mostly for communications equipment, including encrypted radios.

The State Department also says the United States has set aside $64 million in humanitarian assistance for the Syrian people, including contributions to the World Food Program, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other aid agencies.

[I.E. The Obama junta admits to giving the Al Ikhwan rebels in Syria nearly a billion dollars. How much more is being covered up?]

Also on Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury confirmed it had granted authorization to the Syrian Support Group, Washington representative of one of the most active rebel factions, the Free Syrian Army, to conduct financial transactions on the rebel group's behalf. The authorization was first reported on Friday by Al-Monitor, a Middle East news and commentary website.

Last year, when rebels began organizing themselves to challenge the rule of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi...

[who remember was murdered in cold blood by the United States shortly after outing Obama as a covert Al Ikhwan Kenya-born Muslim as I reported at the time and is shown in the above video],

... Obama also signed an initial "finding" broadly authorizing secret U.S. backing for them. But the president moved cautiously in authorizing specific measures to support them.

Some U.S. lawmakers, such as Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham, have criticized Obama for moving too slowly to assist the rebels and have suggested the U.S. government become directly involved in arming Assad's opponents.

[Its not just the Democratic traitors! The One Party hierarchy controlling the former US is working together on this and ROMNEY is a backer of this wing of the Republican Party.]

Other lawmakers have suggested caution, saying too little is known about the many rebel groups.

[Not so, it is well documented who they are: al Ikwan with substantial Iranian backing. Why are the "cautious" lawmakers afraid to admit the truth?]

Recent news reports from the region have suggested that the influence and numbers of Islamist militants, some of them connected to al Qaeda or its affiliates, have been growing among Assad's opponents.

U.S. and European officials say that, so far, intelligence agencies do not believe the militants' role in the anti-Assad opposition is dominant.

While U.S. and allied government experts believe that the Syrian rebels have been making some progress against Assad's forces lately, most believe the conflict is nowhere near resolution, and could go on for years.
